I’m pretty confident most Browns fans were as puzzled as I was when Mike Holmgren’s “exhaustive” coaching search ended in about a week with the hiring of Ram’s quarterback coach Pat Shurmur.
I mean, who is this guy? Why is he qualified to lead the Cleveland Browns? … OK, let me rephrase that: Why is he qualified to be a head coach in the NFL?
What happened to Jon Gruden? I thought for sure he would have been a shoe-in, what with his ties to Holmgren and Cleveland. Apparently, though, he wasn’t even interviewed.
Early rumors were that John Fox and Marty Morningweg were the front-runners. Let me tell you, I’m thrilled that didn’t pan out … but Pat Shurmur? Really?
I understand the urgency of getting a new head coach in place, but doesn’t it seem like Holmgren settled a little too quickly? I mean, if he had waited a little longer, would he have considered fired Titans’ coach Jeff Fisher?
Oh well, the reality is Pat Shurmur is the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
I wish him nothing but good luck (as I did Mangini two years ago) and I will do my best to give you the benefit of the doubt as you begin your term here in Cleveland.
Go Browns!
