Giant Disappointment

Well, it's difficult to take away anything good from preseason game No. 2 against the Giants.

The Browns lost more than the game - they lost Anderson, Cribbs Pool, and Leon Williams to injury, and perhaps they also lost the respect of all the national prognosticators who've been picking Cleveland as the team to beat in the AFC North.

But maybe, just maybe, this is exactly the wake-up call the Browns needed. After all, these are the Browns we're talking about ... they're not exactly used to the national spotlight. Perhaps it was going to their heads and this humbling loss to the Super Bowl champs will help them refocus.

Three things I didn't like about the "game":
  1. The Defense - It looked terrible. We couldn't stop the run. We couldn't stop the big play. Eli picked us apart and exposed some big holes.
  2. The O-Line - Did they forget how to block? Anderson didn't have a whole lot of time in the pocket. His throws were way off and suffered a concussion from a big hit in the second quarter. Where's his protection from last year?
  3. The Brown Pants - I know I've been harping on this a lot, but I really don't like the brown pants. Unnecessary ... there is absolutely no reason for the Browns to make ANY modifications to their uniforms. I HATE the brown pants, and I hope we never see them again.
Three things I liked about the "game":
  1. Syndric Steptoe - He had three receptions for 80 yards and two TDs (one receiving, one running). He's making a case for a spot on this squad.
  2. Jerome Harrison - His 23-yard run in the third quarter was the kind of explosive, hard running we need to back up Lewis.
  3. Brady Quinn - Again, a solid performance from Brady with the second string. He threw some deeper passes than last week, and directed the Browns to an almost comeback.
According to Crennel, Anderson's condition, as well as Cribbs', will be updated today. If Anderson's concussion keeps him out Saturday against the Lions, it'll be interesting to see how Brady does with the first string.

  1. Preseason. All teams have games like this in the preseason. Health will be the only thing that derails the Browns...if they stay relatively healthy, they will be fine.

As for the Brown pants, well they just need to be buried somewhere very, very deep.

White on white, with the Brown jerseys no more than twice a year.

  2. If the Browns want to win the division or make a run in the playoffs they must improve their secondary ASAP. Our DB's got burned bad in both preseason games and looked just as bad if not worse than last year. That will be the key to our success. Any game we lose will be on their shoulders.

As far as the brown pants. It's the preseason so no harm in trying something new. Just be thankful they haven't brought out black jerseys or some other uniform modification not in the current color scheme.

    Go Browns!

  3. Pete,

First off, you have no idea what your talking about when it comes to the Browns.

Second, the Brown pants were a nice change. You are just not use to it. God forbid we make a change! No one ever said they were making modifications to the uniforms. Every NFL team changes uniform twice a year just to perk interest in the game. Listening to player interviews, they loved the pants; but who cares what the players think. The fact is they got beat so bad, they will never wear the Brown pants again. Just like when they got beat on Monday night a few years back wearing the orange jerseys. For the record - The Browns are the only team that has only one color option for pants in all of the NFL. But who wants change?! Thanks to you and the media your wish will come true = NO MORE BROWN PANTS.

About Steptoe - He has been on the practice squad for over a year. He has one good game and you want to put him on the roster. Thats the problem with Browns fans. Im glad to see the GM does not listen to the fans.

About Quinn - Your just another guy who has a man-crush on Brady!

What makes you think I have no idea what I’m talking about when it comes to the Browns? You don’t even sound like a fan. Steptoe has played well all preseason (and last year as well). That’s all I’m saying.

As for the uniforms - when a team wears a different uniform and then asks fans to vote on whether or not they’d want to see that uniform again, it sounds like a modification to me. It wasn’t a nice change at all. It was stupid.

The Browns have a classic uniform that shouldn’t be changed. Diehard football fans know this.

Why make modifications to drum up interest in the game? Usually, what you’re talking about is when teams wear the third alternate jersey in order to sell merchandise. Last time I checked, people aren’t going out and buying authentic football pants to wear around the house.

And, of course the team is going to give the media quotes from players who like the uniforms … it’s called public relations. They’re controlling the message. Fortunately, those hideous pants spoke for themselves.
