Some blog readers have questioned this … especially my brother, who really like Jones for the No. 6 pick.
Sure, Jones really showed off at the NFL Combine … he displayed speed, agility … basically, he looked awesome. Of course, you still cannot overlook Green.
The Georgia receiver has great hands and runs routes with excellent precision.
Here’s the official description on Green from the NFL Combine website:
Strengths: Green possesses prototypical height, a wide catch-radius, and very good speed. A true vertical, big play threat. Explodes off the line. Eats up cushions immediately. Doesn't idle down in-and-out of his breaks. Displays the ability to uncover against zone. Can haul in the poorly thrown pass and wins most jump balls. Productive over the middle. Very competitive.Let’s look at the 40-yard dash times. Jones ran an impressive 4.39 while Green ran a 4.50 — I mean, really, in the grand scheme of things, what’s the different between .11 seconds?
Weaknesses: Only possesses adequate bulk. Can be harassed at the line by physical press-man corners with good size. Bigger defensive backs will compete with him for 50-50's. Would like to see more sustained effort and physicality while run blocking. Suspended by NCAA for selling a jersey.
They’re almost equal in the bench press — Green benched 18 reps, while Jones had 17.
Size-wise, Jones has about an inch in height on Green and 11 pounds.
On paper, they both look like great receivers and, believe me; I wouldn’t be disappointed with either of them in a Browns uniform next season. But, I just like Green better. I think he’ll fit in and be able to make an immediate positive contribution to this team.
I’m not the only blogger who thinks so, either. The Bleacher Report has AJ Green as a “lock” for the No. 6 pick.
If the Browns pick a wide receiver with the No. 6 pick, who’s your preference and why?
Go Browns!

Julio Jones is the better overall football player, but A.J. Green definitely is a better fit for the West Coast offense because of his route running and superior pass catching ability. However, you can't go wrong with either, and I believe both are more of a sure thing than any of the defensive linemen who will be available.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment, Matty. I knew I could count on you to agree with me on issues not relating to Josh Cribbs ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreen is spot on what you need.
ReplyDeleteHis "pros" fill the gaps that your current "receivers" have left in your passing game. His "cons" are easily overcome by play calling and audibles based on how the opposing defense sets up, save for one. . . but no one would buy a Browns jersey anyway.
We already have AJ Green on our roster. He goes by the name Mohamed Massaquoi. Julio! Julio! Julio!
ReplyDeleteAJ Green is the question mark not Julio Jones. He's won a NC. In the words of the great Charlie Sheen, "Winner."
Wait, sorry..."Winning"
