Rated M for Meaningless

So, the Browns extended their streak of beating the defending Super Bowl champs on Saturday when they trounced the Green Bay Packers in the first preseason game.

Now, I normally wouldn’t count this as anything official, since it was a preseason game, but since the Brownies do not face the Packers in the regular season this year, it’ll have to do. The streak has been extended. There, it’s official now.

Of course, keep in mind, the Browns beat the Packers in the preseason last year and they went on to win the Super Bowl … just saying.

You gotta love us Browns fans – hours before the game, we were out there tailgating (not me, I don’t get into the preseason that full throttle). The Browns win a preseason game, and we act like we just made it to the playoffs (a bit of an exaggeration, but some fans really act this way … must have been all that drinking at the 10-hour tailgate party).

My point here is, and I’ve said this many times, the preseason is meaningless. No matter how much hype the NFL puts into it, these games mean nothing.

Am I glad the Browns won? Of course I am. Do I put any stock in that win? Not really.

I will say this, though – since it was the first real glimpse I got of this new regime, I was impressed with how cohesive both the offensive and defensive units looked.

If the way the first teams played on Saturday is any indication of how they’ll play during the regular season (which it may or may not be), then I believe we’re in for some better football than we might have anticipated from this team. It’s all we have to go on for now, so I’ll happily take it and look forward to seeing some more good things from them.

Now, here’s what I liked and didn’t like from Saturday’s “game.”

LIKED seeing Bernie in the booth calling the game. He’s so entertaining, both from an unintentional comedy factor and from a knowledgeable football mind factor. He provides both great insights into the game, as well as comic relief. I never liked Bernie more than I do as an announcer.

DIDN’T LIKE that Jim Donovan is still out on medical leave. I hope he’s recovering and will be back soon.

LIKED that the head honcho himself, Mike Holmgren, was in the booth during pregame for an interview. I hope he makes his presence known more this year than he did last season.

DIDN’T LIKE that we had to call a time-out before the first play even started. I know it’s the preseason, but that’s embarrassing.

LIKED that the defense shut down the Packer offense on the first series. Very promising start.

DIDN’T LIKE that Josh Cribbs is the No. 1 receiver in Massaquoi’s absence. Still wish we were a little deeper at this position, but we’ll see how it goes.

LIKED that Josh Cribbs actually looked like a wide receiver instead of a special teams pretender. He caught some good passes and, though it was against a backup corner, his touchdown catch was awesome. Keep it up, Cribbs, and earn some of that money.

OK, I could go on and on, but you get the picture. It’s really difficult to get a good read on this team from two weeks of practice and one preseason game … Time to get ready for the Lions and the Battle of Lake Erie.

Go Browns!
