OMG! Can you believe it? Obviously, this means he's about to be named the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, who will go on to routinely beat up on Michigan.
There's no other explanation, really. Hmm, well, I guess it could be that he simply wanted to stop by his hometown and visit practice, maybe catch up with some other coaches (including former rival Lloyd Carr, who was also at camp). Yes, that's another possibility.
I find it sadly fascinating that this is the thing everyone is talking about from Berea. Not that Montario Hardesty continues to practice in full pads. Not that the offense and defense are progressing nicely after a solid showing against Green Bay. Not that Massaquoi had his cast removed.
No, the big news is that an unemployed, disgraced former college coach made an appearance at camp.
I wouldn't be making such a big deal about this, however, if it weren't for the inevitable dumb remarks from Buckeye Nation.
For example, on Facebook, The Morning Journal asked the silly question: "Should the Browns bring in Jim Tressel as an assistant coach?" And, let the ignorant responses commence ...
- "That would be a good addition to the team."
- "DEFINATELY!!! Are you kidding?!!!! That would be Great!"
- "Absolutely!!! Groom him for the head spot next season."
- "HELL YES!"
It kind of baffles me how Ohio State fans, who are in for a world of disappointment this season thanks to Tressel's selfish actions, still respect this guy after what he did to their beloved Buckeyes. It makes me wonder, was Buckeye Nation really just Tressel Nation and Ohio State really doesn't have the backing of so many scarlet and gray clad Ohioans?
Look, I don't deny that Jim Tressel is a good coach. He definitely knows college football. And, as many football fans know, a successful college coach does not a great NFL coach make (just ask Steve Spurrier and countless others).
It really grinds my gears when idiot fans try to mix Ohio State football and the Cleveland Browns. Whenever the Browns are playing poorly, there's that inevitable dumb comment from a Buckeye fan, "Ohio State could beat the Browns."
The correct response is to punch this moron in the face, because there is no way in hell even the greatest college team could ever beat the worst NFL team. End of story.
We haven't even given Shurmur and his staff a chance yet, so please let's just stop with the whole "Jim Tressel as coach of the Browns" campaign.
Go Browns!
