What Would You Do without the NFL?

I saw a poll on The Morning Journal yesterday in which readers weighed in on what they would do if there was no NFL season in 2011.

Not surprisingly, the top answer (with 44% of the votes) was "turn to Lingerie Football and Arena Football." Very funny, voters.

What I do find interesting is that 13% of respondents said they'd "start paying attention to the other football (soccer)." I'm not quite sure if this response is higher or lower than I'd expect, considering the polling sample was quite small (I believe it was only up for a day).

Of course, this got me thinking ... hence this blog post.

There are two main questions I have for you, my loyal Blawg Pound readers.

First, what would you do if there was no NFL season in 2011? Seriously, what would your Sundays be like this fall if there were no NFL games to watch on TV ... no Browns games to tailgate at ... no fantasy football to play?

I really want to hear from you. Please, post your answers below in the comment section.

My second question is, would you consider following soccer?

More Americans have become interested in soccer lately, but despite what soccer fans think, it's not that popular and certainly isn't going to reach the heights of the NFL, NBA, MLB or probably even the NHL.

But ... if there was no NFL this fall, would more football fans turn to futbol?

Seriously, I want to know what you think. You can answer either question, or both ... or simply post your thoughts on the subject (there may even be a prize involved for the best commenter).

Go Browns!

  1. You had to write this? Seriously, I think you're trying to kill me with this one.

1st as a fan of both football and soccer, liking the two isn't mutually exclusive.

2nd you may want to check some attendance numbers from last season, the MLS was extremely competitive with both the NBA and NHL, leading average attendance numbers for regular season games for quite a while. Soccer fans will also admit that as leagues go, the MLS isn't exactly at the top of the food chain internationally.

But I digress. . . I can tell you however that Cleveland isn't that interested in soccer, football or not. Consider this; The ONLY championship teams Cleveland has had since the 64 Browns were the Cleveland Crunch and Cleveland City Stars. The Crunch were the 93-94, 95-96, and 98-99 Champions. The City Stars were the 2008 champions after posting two seasons undefeated at home.

So, what does this all mean? First, you are right, Cleveland is a football town, and this will not change anytime soon. Second I think that this particular scenario proves the point made earlier about the Cleveland sports culture thriving on the underdog mentality. This city has had two championship teams that it couldn't have cared less about.

For those of you who may actually enjoy "The Beautiful Game" I would like to invite each and every one of you to come and take in a National Team game with the Cleveland chapter of The American Outlaws. We gather at Mavis Winkle's in Independence for every U.S. game. The next one will be Saturday, March 26th. Kickoff is at 8:00pm.

  2. I'm not a fan of soccer nor college football, so I'm going to try some (all?) of the ideas from here: http://www.nfl-football-on-the-cheap.com/nfl-football-games.html
