Yes, I know. My moratorium on Cribbs-related Blawg Pound posts didn’t last very long. But, come on … this jackass is making it difficult on me.
First, there’s the tweet Cribbs sent from the NBA All-Star game, while sitting as a guest in Dan Gilbert’s seats, where he took a picture of LeBron James and called him his “boy.”
Whether James and Cribbs are actually “boys” or not, this is just a classless thing to say for someone who is trying to be a hero in Cleveland. Wake up, Cribbs! You know damn well how this city feels about that immature asshole, so why in the world would you make public your association with him?
And to think, Cribbs was a communications studies major with a concentration in public communication at Kent State.
Perhaps, because you successfully held the Cleveland Browns hostage last year and got what you wanted, you feel safe. Well, guess what … you didn’t do shit last season and you’re on very thin ice.
Speaking of ice … Cribbs also appeared at the Lake Erie Monsters game last week to sign autographs for Cleveland Browns Tribute night.
I hope he got booed, but I doubt it.
It was at that game when he waxed poetic about his thoughts on the looming lockout.
"There's a difference between a lockout and a strike,'' Cribbs said. "A strike is from the players; a lockout is from the management.”Well, thanks for clearing that up for us, Professor. I bet you’ve been waiting for the day when you could regurgitate that little nugget since you learned it at Kent State in one of your 100 level courses.
I guess my point is, why do we keep listening to this asshole? Clearly, he doesn’t care about Cleveland.
Just because he plays for the Cleveland Browns doesn’t mean I have to like him. I’ll root for him to play well as long as he’s on the field for our team, but I still think he’s an asshole.
Go Browns!

With all due respect, you sound like a jackass. If a player plays well, you let him get away with murder. If he has a down season (4 dislocated toes could hamper speed and cuts) then you have to rag on him? By the way, if you didn't watch the Browns this past year ... there was a slight combination of minimal offensive progress and even less contributions from the receiver group ...
ReplyDeleteHe is being used in the offense as a weapon. Face it, he is a returner. Teams can afford to kick away from him (which they did all year) because there is a better chance he would have scored with increased opportunity than the offense taking the ball at the 40 and finding a way to produce points.
Cribbs can't be friends with someone in a different city? He can't be friends with LeBron? Wow. People like you give the rest of us a bad name.
By the way, how did he hold the team hostage? He wanted money, and they could either give it to him or choose not to. D'Qwell, Phil Dawson, Eric Wright, Matt Roth and I want to say a few others all had some sort of issues with their contract, but the cleveland media knew it would be a big story and get a lot of clicks if they blew up the one about Cribbs.
Aside from the fact that it is him who is doing his best when he could be demanding a trade to another team and it is actually you acting like an ass hole (what have you contributed to the team or the city?) ...
My point is: Why did you ever listen to the "asshole" in the first place. It's idiots like you that follow bad advice because of star power. Just because he is an amazing athlete and phenomenal player, doesn't mean he is going to be the best member of a public relations or media team. But (with all due respect) I doubt he would be calling out people like you and calling you an asshole.
Just sayin.
I wouldn't say it was a "classless" thing to do at all...they both spent more than a couple years together in Cleveland and developed a friendship. Nobody is perfect, and frankly if every time one of my friends did something stupid I ditched them, I probably would not have any friends. He didn't mean it as a slap in the face to Cleveland and the amount of outlash from that pic is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteAnd for Christ's sake, he's a FOOTBALL player! Anyone commenting on sports entertainment should know better than to call out an athlete on their college major, especially if they went somewhere like Kent State. Give the guy a break! It's Cleveland fans who constantly bitch about everything that give the rest of us a bad name.
Thank you for the comments. You have some valid points and we're all entitled to our opinions.
ReplyDeleteMy beef with Cribbs started not with him, but the unwarranted media hype that surrounded him. He's a great special teams returner. He's only an OK wide receiver, and he's not even a good quarterback.
But, the Cleveland media hyped him up as the greatest thing since nickle beer night and, unfortunately, he started to believe it.
He believed he deserved more money for doing exactly what he was signed to do. Fine, but wait until your contract is up and renegotiate. Don't say you want to be traded — that shows no loyalty to the city that has cheered you on and built you up.
If you want to be friends with LeBron James, that's your business. I don't give a shit who he's friends with ... but, he knows how this city feels about James. Rubbing it in our faces is just another demonstration of his lack of caring for this city that has given him so much.
In fact, my Fellow Browns Fan, Josh Cribbs did demand a trade last year unless he was given a new contract. I'm simply pointing out what other are so eager to forget (how's that make me an asshole?)
As for the Kent State/college major comment, I'll agree that was a bit of a cheap shot, CourtSideofSports.
If you read more of my blog, however, I think you'll find that I'm not, as you say, constantly bitching about everything.
On the contrary, I try to be as positive as any Browns fan can be. Sure, at times I'm disappointed in some of the things this team does, but I'm still a Browns fan and I still cheer for them every week.
I want to see them succeed. I really do. My beef is usually with the Cleveland media more than it is with the Browns or the players (even Cribbs).
Perhaps calling him a jackass and an asshole is a bit much, but we're all entitled to our opinions. I express mine here in The Blawg Pound.
Thanks for reading and thanks again for the comments.
Go Browns!
I wish John Cribbs was half as good as his fans think he is. Injuries or not last season he's not a great player. He's one dimensional and had a good year a couple seasons ago. Every now and then a player can have a good year for whatever reason. Let's not forget DA was a Pro Bowler! Now look at him!
ReplyDeleteCribbs, like most Pro Athletes, wanted more money and the way his contact was handled says more about the Browns organizations for giving in than it does for Cribbs demanding more. He asked for more money and sadly enough the Browns paid him and got ZIP back for their investment last season.
I got soured on Cribbs a year ago because of his contact situation. He wanted more money based on past performances and merit but now that he's underperformed do you think he has regrets that he's getting overpaid. I doubt it. He cares about himself like most Pro Athletes and anyone in Cleveland who thinks he cares about them is dilusional. I wouldn't defend that guy or any athlete because they play for their bank account, not the fans or City.
Well said, Mark. That's exactly my point.
ReplyDeleteCribbs cares about himself. Not the city of Cleveland and certainly not Browns fans.
Thanks for commenting.
As a Steelers fan I can say that Cribbs is a testament to the city, its work ethic and loyalty. Hell, I trust his judgment on when to say things in interviews vs tweeting them, I mean he was a communications studies major with a concentration in public communication at Kent State, and we all know that you cannot find a better institution for that particular career path. . .
ReplyDelete—
Cribbs is what he is, a Special Teamer. He filled the void as a receiver, because there were no other receivers. He lined up in the Wildcat because it was all-the-rage for 20 minutes or so. Cleveland created this by hyping him up, the media fed off of the hype to fill copy space. . . no one else really cared. Sure you heard his name announced a bunch during games, but lets face facts, until Hillis started running, there wasn't much else to talk about save for the kick returner lining up as a QB.
Thanks for the comment, RJ. That's the most sensible thing I've ever heard from a Steelers fan.
ReplyDeleteGo Browns!
I almost let this one slide ... A Fellow Browns Fan said: "If a player plays well, you let him get away with murder."
ReplyDeleteAre you referring to the photo I used for this post, where Cribbs his hanging out with Ray Lewis?
LOL! Good one, A Fellow Browns Fan!
Go Browns!
